Privacy policy
Your collection stays yours.
Last updated: 20 May 2026
Scanr is built so the data about your cards never has to leave your devices. This page explains what is and isn't collected, what's stored where, and which third parties are involved when you use the app.
The short version
- Your library, decks, tags, and notes live in local storage on your device.
- Optional iCloud sync uses your own private iCloud database — owned by your Apple ID, not by us.
- We do not run analytics, ad SDKs, or telemetry. We do not have servers that store your collection.
- Card data and images come from Scryfall. Purchases go through Apple's StoreKit.
What Scanr stores on your device
Scanr keeps a local database (SwiftData) on the device containing:
- Scanned cards and their printings, quantities, foil/condition, tags and notes.
- Decks, deck entries, and deckbuilding metadata.
- Application preferences (theme, sort order, onboarding state).
- Cached Scryfall card data and downloaded card images, kept for offline use.
This data never leaves the device unless you explicitly enable iCloud sync, share an export, or take an action (like opening a Moxfield link) that hands data to another app.
iCloud sync (Pro)
Pro unlocks optional sync between your iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Sync uses Apple's private CloudKit database tied to your Apple ID. The author of Scanr cannot read, list, or modify the contents of your private database. Apple's privacy policy governs how Apple handles the underlying storage.
You can disable sync at any time in Settings → Sync, which stops further changes from being copied to iCloud. Wiping the Scanr container from Settings → Apple ID → iCloud → Manage Account Storage removes the synced data from iCloud entirely.
Camera and photo library
Scanning uses the camera to recognise cards on-device. Frames are processed locally; they are not uploaded or stored unless you explicitly save a card. If you import a photo, the image is read once into memory to extract the card details, then released.
Third-party services
- Scryfall — every card lookup, price refresh, and image load goes to scryfall.com. Scryfall sees the card you queried plus your IP address and User-Agent. We do not send your collection or any identifier. Their API documentation describes their handling.
- Apple — in-app purchases (Pro) and iCloud sync are handled entirely by Apple. We receive an anonymous receipt confirming entitlement, never your payment details.
What we do not collect
- No account creation. There is no Scanr login.
- No analytics SDKs, crash reporters, or attribution networks.
- No advertising. We do not show ads or share data with advertisers.
- No tracking across apps or websites.
Data export and deletion
You can export your collection as CSV (Pro) or your decks as text/Moxfield/Scryfall format at any time. To delete everything, uninstall the app — local storage is removed with it. To also clear synced data, sign in to Settings → Apple ID → iCloud → Manage Account Storage → Scanr and remove the data there.
Children
Scanr is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect any information from them.
Changes to this policy
If we change how Scanr handles data, this page will be updated and the "Last updated" date above will change. Material changes will also be surfaced in the app on the first launch after the update.
